'Shiatsu is like the mother hugging her baby'
Shizuto Masunaga, Founder of Zen Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a gentle, restorative, clothed massage form from Japan, in which palm and thumb pressure along the meridian lines used in acupuncture help to restore and maintain balance and wellbeing of body, mind and emotions.
It is not uncomfortable in any way, it is very relaxing; working on the parasympathetic nervous system and aiding the organs, It benefits digestion, the hormonal cycle for women, calms over-active nervous system responses, aids lymph flow and circulation and the release of muscle tension. Shiatsu is good for all minor ailments, and aids the mental and emotional state for general wellbeing.
Shiatsu involves acupressure massage. It is rooted in traditional Chinese Medicine brought to Japan hundreds of years ago and the 'Anma' : gentle massage-pressure techniques of this part of the world.
Shiatsu is interactive: working with the receiving person's own energy that is working to bring/maintain health: the 'self-healing' energy of the Receiver.
'It begins with pressure with the fingers but it is difficult to say why pressing the point cures disease. In both Zen and Shiatsu we are dealing with something that cannot be explained rationally but that should be felt by the living body.' Shizuto Masunaga
